Pegacorn Group is a finance, accounting, and HR consulting firm built for venture-backed startups. We've worked with companies from pre-seed through public, across cybersecurity, biotech, healthcare, deep tech, and SaaS — quietly, and on their timeline.

The origin

Built from inside startups, not from a consulting playbook.

In 2014, Matt Twiford moved to Boston and joined a 200-person tech company with offices in Boston, San Francisco, New York, Australia, and Europe. He learned how finance works at scale — across geographies, currencies, and reporting cycles.

Eighteen months later, he became the sixth employee at a smaller startup. He learned how finance works at zero scale — when you're building the chart of accounts, picking the payroll provider, and closing the books yourself. The company was acquired in 2019.

He spent four more months at the acquirer integrating a New York-based acquisition, then took a sabbatical to travel.

The idea for Pegacorn took shape during that sabbatical. He'd already taken on a side-project client in 2017 — a startup that was itself acquired shortly after. The pattern was clear: founders weren't being underserved by a shortage of finance talent. They were being underserved by a mismatch. Bookkeepers who didn't understand venture economics. CFO consultants who delivered decks but didn't do the work. Big 4 firms charging Big 4 rates for things a fractional team should handle in a week.

Pegacorn was built to be the alternative: operator-led finance and HR for venture-backed startups, run by people who've actually done the work inside companies just like theirs.

Our framework

Finance succeeds or fails on three things.

Most fractional CFO firms sell hours. We sell outcomes. Across every engagement — pre-seed bookkeeping or pre-IPO audit prep — we anchor the work on the same three pillars.

Process

The right processes and procedures. Monthly close on schedule. Reporting that ties to actuals. Internal controls that scale with the team. When the process is right, finance stops being a fire drill and starts being a system.

Systems

The right software stack, properly implemented. Accounting platform, AP/AR, expenses, payroll, equity. Most startups have either the wrong tools or the right tools used wrong. We get the stack right, and we make sure it actually does the job — invoicing, bill pay, internal controls, and clean financials.

People

The right team, well-led. We help founders hire the right roles in the right order — bookkeeper, controller, VP Finance, CFO — and we mentor the people they hire. Finance teams don't just need to be staffed. They need to be grown.

Matt Twiford

Founder & Managing Partner

Matt Twiford founded Pegacorn Group after a decade-plus inside venture-backed startups, including two acquisitions. He's led companies through Series A and B raises, Series C and beyond, acquisition diligence and exits, SOX implementation for a subsidiary of a publicly traded company, and large-scale restructurings.

He's worked across cybersecurity, biotech, healthcare, deep tech, SaaS, professional services, and industrial manufacturing. He holds an MBA from Suffolk University (2018).

He works directly with founders, leadership teams, and boards — not through layers of associates and account managers. When you hire Pegacorn, the person on the call is the person doing the work.
